My buddy found this rock way out in the woods while on his 3-wheeler 10 years ago .He said there were other similar ones there , but since it weighs about 15 pounds he only lugged one home . It's approximately 8'' wide X 5'' thick . The hole is about 2'' deep / 1'' wide . He said he would try to take me to the site (if he can remember how to get there)
Is it indian ? If so what was it for ? Thanks !

Michelle , one of my friends kids painted on the bottom of it when they first got it and its been used as a doorstop ever since , so most of the paint wore off .

As my mother studied Anthropology and Archeology while she was in school Ive had a lot of opportunity to see items similar in College museums, books etc... It looks very very similar to a "fire starter rock" Ive posted a picture Ive found on the net.

This auction site describes item 70 as an Indian fire starter rock. Hopefully you can make out item 70 in the picture the numbers are kind hard to read.. But its basically the item in the lower center that looks exactly like yours in the picture below...

Great find if its not some sort of reproduction... Yours looks worn on the bottom, almost flat which indicates to me that tthis item was in use for the job of starting fires... Edit: Or just a not so good door stop :) .. Actually it looks pretty real to me... I have another picture from a Book ill scan and post...

Where did you find it (region etc..) ? So maybe we can determin possible natives that may have used this...
