How do you know this is Roman? (have you seen references) Just interested, as it looks a little crude for the exacting standards of the Romans. I would have guessed mid-Saxon?

Not putting your find down because as you know Saxon is Rarer. Just trying to broaden my knowledge base, its the first one I have seen?

In the UK that would be Treasure Trove & I would have to hand it in, do you?

Hi Folkert

Nice find. Were you detecting in the woods or in an open area? How deep was it? After being in the ground for 2000 years i imagine it produced a nice tone. Did you initially think it was a silver coin or did it ring up differently?

Thanks for showing us the neat find

HH

Sanat

thats amazing....i need to take a trip to the europe.

Interesting piece Folkert, it does look Saxon, not that I have found any 750 AD Saxon finds. HH, Mike

Looks like an interesting site, I will have a look when I get some time. I am working in the RP 70 km from Trier, my apartment is on the Sirona Trail. My Archaeologist (Ansprechspartner) told me not to get interested in the Sirona Trail as I would be lucky to find anything and that is what I did, I have not found anything old there since I have been there in 9 months. I will be very happy to leave the area in March!!! HH, Mike

Thats an interesting find. :) Hope you find some more stuff there.

This looks to be a 12th century Gothic piece to me, maybe french, but without an exact match its hard to tell for sure

Crusader you say

"In the UK that would be Treasure Trove & I would have to hand it in, do you?"

why would you give this up as treasure trove as single items are not deemed treasure trove? it would still be of interest for reseach etc but no law is being broken by not declaring it

Under the 1996 Act - it is Over 300 years old & has more than 10% silver or gold content. Its only single coins that don't count. Single artefacts do.

THIS LAW WAS PASSED IN 1997 SO COULD YOU EXPLAIN EXACTLY HOW ANYONE CAN PIN POINT THE DATE A 2000 YEAR OLD ITEM WAS FOUND????

THAT IS TO SAY IF IT WAS FOUND BEFORE 1997 IN DOES NOT COME UNDER THIS ACT....

WHO'S TO SAY THIS ITEM OR ANY ITEM WASN'T FOUND IN 1906 - 1996 THUS AVOIDING THIS ACT????????? (NOT EVERYTHING IS FOUND WITH DETECTORS YOU KNOW)

ITS ABOUT TIME PEOPLE STOPPED LETTING LAWS TAKE THEIR FINDS IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THAT GAME GO GET A JOB DIGGING FOR THE GOVERMENT THEN SEE HOW MUCH RECONITION THAT GETS YOU >:( >:( >:(

JUST TO FINNISH THIS IS A METAL DETECTING LAW SO WHOS TO SAY IT WASN'T FOUND DIGGING SOME FOUNDATIONS???

YOU REALY SHOULD GET OUT MORE ;D ;D ;D

Yes I meant to say 1997 (1996 was a guessimate)

I hear what your saying but we are getting off topic here. This is about his find. Sorry I mentioned the Act.

Have to agree with you on this one ....let the the governing people who want you to give your finds up spend hours & hours in the fields in all types of weather.

This subject of treasure trove makes my blood boil >:( >:( >:(

i spend 8 hours in the pouring rain and mud at a site which is about to be concereted over for a housing estate with all finds lost forever which no one at treasure trove gives a monkeys about, yet wen i find something of importance i am expected to hand it over to treasure trove and wait 2 years to find out if it is worth anything then if it is i get a fraction of it value. Or i could always donate it to a mussiam where ill get a little note saying who donated it...............

call me old fashoined but when treasure trove start paying me for the weeks of not finding anything then ill start working for them >:( >:( >:(

Good job you don't live in the US then. They generally like our Laws & want them as their model. Over there items can be taken without any payment to the finder.
