When I hung out in beautiful downtown 29 Palms, I saw a lot of this type of rock. A lapidary in Yucca Valley told me what it was, but the 40+ intervening years plus one stroke puts it somewhat out of my reach. If there are any rock or lapidary shops still in the area, take it by and ask. The worst they can say is that they do not know.

Time for more coffee.

I took it to a rock store in Joshua Tree and the gentleman working there didn't know what it was.

See if a sharp piece of quartz scratches it, if it doesn't its quartz, maybe jasper or just quartz with the rusty being iron the maroonish red and pinkish could be hematite, just a guess... Oh welcome to the forum.
Steve.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve, I'll try the quartz and let you know

It looks like quartzite, the red color in the fractures is probably iron staining.
