Yes size would help in the guessing also where you found it as in state or dry land. Welcome to the site.
 

Thanks for your help!...I found it at the top of a bluff overlooking the mississippi river here in MN....We have mounds in the general area...but not sure if it would be that old...it's about 3 inches acrossthanks again
 

It has all the characteristics of a cupulet but did you scratch the patina in the cup? Glad you joined and posted. There a lot more knowledgable than me. Lets see what they say. It sounds like you are in a good area for artifact hunting.

Could be one of those nutting stones?
 

Thanks TN...no, the grooves were there...that was one of the main reasons I was thinking it might be an artifact..Good to be here! Thanks for the welcome! Funny, I've already got more help here than at the museum...they have a trade and ID center and didn't really have any idea what it was...but I think they are just students...
 

Considering the size, my guess would be a capstone for a bow drill or firestarter.
