Rope

While snorkeling in St. Marten I found some rope that was running under about 5 feet of coral,also nearby I found some wood sticking out of the sand under the coral. I was wondering how long these items can remain intact under water? I pulled on the rope and it was not rotted. How long would it take for about 5 feet of coral to develop?
