Round Buckle Looking Thing stamped with 1882 Date

Here's another piece from the one room schoolhouse site. It's clearly stamped "MAR 14,82 and AUG 12,84. Any ideas?? Thanks,

It appears to be the back of a horse bridle rosette— perhaps a glass-front rosette similar to one of these.
