I have my mask, fins, shorty and Excal packed in a backpack style dive bag. Does anyone know if I can carry on this and keep it on my person after checking thru security in Port Canaveral. I'm not wanting to check this one bag for fear of it showing up at room minus one Excaliber. Any input would be appreciated.

explain it at check in. show em what you got and what it's used for. probably very little to worry about as far as carrying it on. Heck, treat it like a carryon bag.

Lithium batteries can be an issue for sure these days so keep that in mind....

All I have is the original NiMH Excal battery and not carrying charger. I have a full charge and will only be able to snorkel one day for 4-5 hours at best.

Your carry on bag will be x-rayed when you depart the terminal and if the screener is "good" he will spot what will appear to be something suspicious in your bag. You will probably be taken to "secondary screening" to have your bag manually inspected. They will look at your stuff and send you on your way. It should only take a couple of moments. You may want to have your Xcal operators manual with you to show the inspectors what the machine really is...Xcal's are kind of funny looking to the uninitiated...

If you have a dive knife, ship security will hold it for you until you depart the ship at your destination. A dive knife is considered an essential piece of safety equipment and they will not confiscate it.

Thanks Mon on the detector manual part. Not carrying knife as I loaned my whole dive gear out to a close fiend and the knife or shot weight belt never made it back. Only beach snorkeling with wifey. Yes the 2 round pods kind of look like some type of explosive devices I guess if you don't know better, but I'm sure they've seen a few come thru.

Enjoy your Trip Fletch88

I bring my etrac on carry on all the time and the always pull me aside to check it out. As long as the bag can fit in the carry on size checker that they usually have near the gate then you will be ok.

Alright just cut my mini RTG aluminum scoop in half and made it a travel scoop. A 1" pipe nipple fits the I.D. of 1 1/4 aluminum handle perfectly. I've got my Excal in a seperate small bag that I can pull out of dive bag if need be. It's only 24" long so shouldn't be a problem if I can't carry the whole dive bag on.

They never even opened the bag , which is actually a tent bag They sent her through X-Ray and said have fun and find some loot mate!

Well it was almost a total skunk out in Bahamas, but I did manage one 10k earring, a sterling angel and $1.94 in clad. Did stop at east coast beach on the way home and hit a couple goo coin lines that netted over $10 in 3 hours.

Thanks RustyGold, we did have a wonderful time!

Just for those reading the thread as they prepare to fly off to their own adventures...lithium batteries must go in your carry on, not allowed in the checked baggage. Weird right?

Kevin - where did you learn this? I am flying down to Grand Cayman after Christmas and plan to carry my E-trac with my after-market lithium battery. I flew down there a year ago and checked my E-trac as checked luggage, but at that time I still had the factory battery. Are you saying I should take the lithium battery in my carry-on?

Here's a link that explains when and why. It says to keep batteries with you not in checked baggage. Will the whole upper part of the Etrac fit in a carry-on?http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/safe-travel-batteries-and-devices

Right..fire related hazard is the main reason. They made a big deal of it on a recent flight I took.

I just checked the site and read....

As of January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) no longer allows loose lithium batteries in checked baggage.

I copied the statement word-for-word, and the word "loose" was already bold. So it seems that as long as the battery is installed in the machine, this should be acceptable. I have a military pelican case which holds all my gear including detector, travel sand scoop, finds pouch, digging tools, sunscreen, etc. and would rather send all this stuff through checked baggage. The last time I went to Grand Cayman was in March 2012 and upon arrival the case had indeed been opened and inspected but everything was still there, including the battery in the Etrac.
