Here are a couple of axes that I have found over the past couple of years, 3/4 groove and full groove.
Any info on these axes would be helpful Time periods etc. Hope you enjoy the pics and I hope the pics come out right, I have been having trouble posting so here it goes Molly.
Thanks,
Clint

Those are excellent finds, wish I could find a grooved axe, I found a notched one, but not grooved yet.
Thanks for sharing, glad you got to post.

Molly.

Nice finds for sure! I haven't found one yet either Molly, so don't feel bad. I believe the full groove axe appeared about 5000 years ago, and sometime after that the 3/4 groove came along, as hafting methods improved. I could be wrong, so if I am please post, so we all know for certain.

One of the oldest finds of a ground stone grooved axe was at the Modoc rock shelter in Southern Ill. It was a 6 inch full grooved axe that was ca dated to 5000BC. The 3/4 grooved axe family In terms of numbers is the most popular grooved axe in North America , but believed to come after the full grooved axe. Then 1/2 grooved, Then single grooved axe ,Celts are notorious for being found on Mississippian, woodland sites. I believe full grooved axes are archahic. So I think your right BA. Its also believed that paleo man did not use the axe but crude like river cobbles(Hammerstones) it is thought that when the people evolved (from big game hunters)into the wood working phase(hunters gatherers) that the axe came about. Its also said that the majority of full grooved axes were kinda crude and lacked a lot of the polish displayed in the finer made 3/4 grooved axes. Basically the full grooved axe is not as sophisticated, as the 3/4 leading us to believe the 3/4 axe evolved from the full grooved. Hope that make sense. LOL At least thats my take on it. P.s very nice hardstone show

Thats one huge axe that would wear you down really fast swingin that all day. You all have some fairly large axes. They make mine look like toys. Thanks for showing very nice artifact.
Clint

Flintfinder has it right. Full grooved axes had to be frequently retightened. 3/4 and 1/2 grooved has a flat side so that a wedge could be driven in as the bindings let out. Celts were wedged into the handle through a hole so chopping only tightened the fit.

Thank everyone for all the info and kind words I appreciate the help, as I have only been collecting for three years. Happy New Year
Clint
