Sabre coils

I'm looking at buying a Silver Sabre, but have a question. Are the coils waterproof? How do these detectors preform at the beach?

Do you mean a Silver uMax or a Silver Sabre? The coils are waterproof on both. Your question about the beach: Salt or fresh water? The Silver (uMax or Sabre) would not be good at a salt water beach because they don't have adjustable ground balance. Fresh water O.K. Joe

I don't believe you can get "weighed" coils for those 2 detectors either. So, for detecting shallow water, take a section of PVC pipe (about 2 & 1/2 inches in diameter by 5 or 6 inches long); glue a cap to one end, fill with sand (preferably with WET sand for weight); cap the other end and attach the pipe to the detector shaft just above the coil mount with zip ties. NOW you have a "weighed' coil when needed. In a onetime emergency, takeoff your socks, put one inside of the other, then fill with wet sand and tie them to the shaft. Hey, it works.
