Detector(s) used
Minelab Safari, Garrett GTP 1350, Ace 250, Detector Pro Pistol Probe
I was bored and missed the sound of my safari so I got it out to fiddle with it a bit. I noticed in air it wouldnt pick up a dime until about 4 inches or so from the coil. I know these FBS machines act a little different but is this normal, does it preform better in the ground? Or is somethin wrong with it. I try to be really careful with this thing and any time its bumped or anything it freaks me out. I treat it like its made of glass. :laughing7: Just wonderin if this is somethin I should worry about? Thanks guys

Ive found lots of stuff just not super deep. The last time I had it out I was digging iron at like a foot and a half deep, but it was iron :P. Thats why it didnt make sense that it wasnt picking up the dime very well. I was in the house though, so maybe there was too much interference and stuff. I love the detector but that just worried me a little. The pinpoint on it is dead center everytime. Ive yet to miss a target pinpointing. The hardest thing about it is learning the tones. Thanks for the reply, keep me posted on yours. Josh

No air test on a FBS machine it acts totally different on a ground.

I wondered cuz Ive heard people say a detector will never have more depth in the ground than in an air test. So does this not apply to the FBS machines. Do they get more depth in the ground than an air test?

Yeah every detector hits deeper to the ground than air. Safari must set frequencies for ground conditions when you press noise cancel, on air its impossible. Put coin between books and try then.

Mine will air test a silver dime at 7" and I have dug a clad dime at 9". Monty

A clad dime at 9"? THAT is impressive. I've been trying to decide between the X70 and the Safari. Please tell me that the X70 can perform just as good. There is a $300 price diff though. I just didn't want to take on a 4lbs. machine when the X70 is 2.9 lbs.

This is my first Minelab machine so I can't compare the two. One of my hunting buddies has the X70 and does quite well. I am still learning the Safari and it hasn't been easy because it is so different than any of my other detectors. Monty
