Same Cat

This is the same cat from the other day. This was along side a trail leading to a spring about 10 yards behind the cat... I used what is known to trappers as a "flat set" except without the steel trap, just a couple of feathers placed towards and out of view of the camera with some predator lure on the stick he was sniffing hoping to slow him down... Used a beam break sensor to trigger the camera, and it stopped right where it needed to be. I got fifteen pictures but they were all mostly similar. Here's two crops... He/she wasn't afraid of the camera but was curious about it.

Incredible shots, Ron! In that top pic he/she is looking a bit foamy around the mouth. Sure
hope it's not distemper.

My old trapping partner once made a flat set like that for bobcat. Set a trap on either side,
and came back the next day to find a pair of half-grown cougar cubs had gotten into it, and they were
both sitting there with traps on a front paw. We called the game dept., and they sent out a
biologist who took some health data and helped us release them...although I was concerned
about his methods. He just tossed a blanket over them and held them down while we
removed the trap....

Your pictures are amazing and having those large cats near one must always have their radar on when outside.
I know of families in Connecticut that are cautious of having their children play outside due to the large bear population..

As far as the foamy mouth, I sent these pics to the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Department because someone else told me it was rabid. Yesterday I received a phone call from the biologist and she said that it was nothing to be concerned about and looked healthy.

Biggest problem we had releasing them was their momma...she was hanging around the area,
and did not like us messing with her kids. Several times she verbally made her displeasure known,
all the while walking a circle around us some 50 yds. out.

Glad ya had that looked into. The cats eyes are clear and it does appear healthy, but I've never
known of cats foaming like that, so my first thought was distemper or, worse yet, rabies. Hard
to argue with a biologist...but I'm getting a second opinion.

My older sister now lives in Costa Rica, and in her working career she was a large cat biologist
and worked mostly with tigers, lions and cheetahs. I'd bet she also knows a thing or two about
cougars, so if it's OK with you I'll send her the pic and see what she thinks.

Got a response from my biologist sister about the mouth foaming...

"Cats will salivate when they encounter a scent of something they like or something interesting - an animal's scent, poop, urine and such. Similar to our cats and dogs."

She also said the cat looks very healthy. So, now we know...
