The Metal Detecting Club I belong to was invited to hunt a portion of the Santa Fe trail in Kansas where it is believed a Pre-Civil war battle took place. Well we had about 20 of us out there looking for proof of the battle but couldn't find it. We did find some cool relics from the Santa Fe trail though. some of the more interesting finds were, 1860 something Shield Nickle, 1876cc seated dime, a 2 ringer bullet, a couple mini balls. The funny thing is, I go to a supposed battle field on the Santa Fe Trail and I find a 1945s quarter and a silver plated ring. Here are a couple pictures of the hunt site and my finds. The rutts from the wagons are very deep through this area.

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Nice find's OBD.....Still waiting on the invitation from Gettysburg :D....Is the club allowed back for a second shot?

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

We are suppose to go back today (10am) but I am so sore from yesterday I don't know if I am going to make it.

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Wish I had been there! My g'g'grandfather hauled freight along the Trail before the CW.Told of several battles and acquaintenances.I have a newspaper interview he had in 1929 in Indep,MO.He was a member of the Old Plainsmen Assoc.Best friend w/James,Youngers,Quantrill,K.Carson,Jim Bridger and on and on.His name is Solomon Reed and yes,he was part of the Reeds' that found the first gold in Carolina(17#nugget) and a cousin to the Jim Reed that was on the Donner train. If your club allows visitors and there is a return trip,I would certainly appreciate an invite if possible.Would mind my own business and stay out of everyone's way.

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Looks like it was a great day to be out :)

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Sorry WarsawDaddy, today was the last opportunity we had to metal detect there. I did get back out there today and was able to find a 1919 Buffalo and a couple pieces of lead, including 1 mini ball. I also found a piece of lead in the shape of a cylinder or barrel. I also found a bunch of modern bullets.

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Those are some nice finds and what a great place to be able to detect. Is there any chance of you posting the collective group finds for that area?

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Gypsieheart, how did you know I had the entire colletion of finds with me? We had everyone put their finds in ziplock bags and put their names on it and then leave them on the ground and mark it with a red survey flag. My wife or I then came along with the GPS to mark each find. Once I get the colmplete list of finds together and pictures we are going to display them for the group that actually invited us out, they will take what they want for their museum and let us keep the rest. I will try to get a picture of all the finds in the next day or so after I clean them up a little.

Re: Santa Fe Trail Finds

Great finds!!! I hunt the Cimmaron strip of the Santa Fe Trail myself. I'm sure if you do your research you may find that there are different opinions on where the exact battle was fought. There usually are varying opinions on these subjects.
Make sure you research it throughly and try to find the other areas. Good luck, and go change some history book's.

Outback,

Awesome finds from the Sante Fe Trail.

This is really remarkable...thanks for sharing the pics with us.

Great digs for all of you. 2 ones I sure would love to find. Silver Quarter any type and a seated any type.

Congratulations on that quarter and silver plated ring,

Rev

Now that looked like a nice two days of hunting. Wish more places would let groups like your hunt historical sites.

Our club was invited to hunt a Battle site here in Ohio, near Toledo. The site had a maker just like yours, only problem was the battle site was located about a mile away. Signs don't always sit on the exact site. If I were you guys, I would look at other areas close by and think where a battle might have taken place at. Who knows it might just be on private property and with permission you might all come up with some really good finds. Some of which could be donated to the museum.

Nice finds anyway, the coins and ring could have been lost by a farmer way back when or someone just walking through the area. You just never know what you find.
