… they are sometimes tossed casually into the finds bag … or even the nearest hedge! What a pity, for they are good finds, some of them dating back to the Iron Age.

Can't agree with that ! Travel in South America, Africa and Asia and you see items like spindle whorls still in use as everyday objects. Does anyone throw anything away that looks even remotely interesting? They either go online or take it to the next meeting of their detecting club.
 
Great story John. Interesting and informative. Sounds like a great way to keep our history alive.
