Went and visited mother-in-law today and found these cool little scalloped tokens. Good for 2 1/2 c. in trade Merry's cigar store. On the way home I stopped at an old farm house I am looking for a class ring that was thrown in 1962, and come up with a ring but not that ring.

Oh well guess I'll have to keep looking. Does any one know anything about these tokens??

Love it! That is one sweet token!!!!! WTG!

Great score on not one but two awesome tokens and a ring. Good luck on your return visit

Thanks to all who have commented on the tokens I found. My mother-in-law has found 13 of those same tokens in her yard that is part of the old logging town. I have researched these tokens and have not been able to find them. She wants for me to sell them on feebay for her. Good idea????? or should I sell some where else?? Any advice? Thanks.

E. A. Schmidt co. made oodles of tokens. The fact that you can't find any info on this one might make it rare, that's a good thing.

In what part of the world is your m-i-l's yard? With that many there, that may be a clue as to where to start researching. A quick search shows a cigar store by this name in MI, but the name is not all that rare.

The cataloger of Michigan trade tokens agrees that this is from Gaylord, MI, just 20 miles north of where these were found. 14 Sep 1950 Otsego County Herald Times of Gaylord, MI ad congratulating the pioneer businesses of Gaylord: "Merry Cigar Store, since 1897. Started as a cigar factory by Charles Merry, son Earl has carried on with retail cigar store and recreation center of high quality." 1927 MI Dun & Bradstreet: Chas. E. Merry - Cigs &c and Charles L. Merry - Cigs & Confec

Per the article by Bruce W. Smith in the Dec 2002 issue of the Journal of the Token and Medal Society, "Dating the St. Louis Made Part Incuse Tokens", the E. A. Schmidt Olive Street tokens date 1931-1946.
