None of the various "collectors' reference" books on American Military buttons show one with just the single letter "S." So, your button is a civilian-usage Initial button.

That backmark is listed in McGuinn-&-Bazelon's book on dating button-backmarks as being from 1905 to 1915.

Thank you. It had my heart pumping when I first dug it. Thought it was a confederate script button! Oh well still pretty cool.

Super rare button found

Still a cool find :icon_thumright: I saw a Salvation Army uniform button that made me think yours could be another variety for that organization but I haven't found a match so I don't know that your button is related but here it is anyway...
