Searching in Boca Raton

Ok everyone, I know it's not legal to detect in the water in certain areas of the east coast of Florida, but is it ok to get in the water and detect on the beaches of Boca Raton? I asked a few of my friends up here in Daytona and we all seem to have different opinions.... So I figured I put it out there for the experts.

You can detect the beaches from the mean low water mark to the base of the dune line and keep what you find! No question! Certain areas are off limits like the areas above the Cape, etc. I will let the guys who know those areas specificaly tell you though.

You can detect in the water also, however, you cannot keep anything older than 50 years according to state law. So water detecting IS legal if you are finding rings, watches, modern coins, etc.

Now, some will tell you it is illegal to detect in the lease areas etc. This is not entirely accurate, but you can bet you will get run off if you do!

You may also have some issues with the State Park areas! I generaly stay away from State and private areas!

There is an area immediate north of Boca Raton Inlet, from the north jetty and north for some distance, that is a federal admiralty lease area.

Here in Florida, the same laws apply to the beach areas that apply to the underwater areas, with regards to what is an artifact and what is not.

The difference is, the lease area restrictions do not apply to the beach. Locate the zillion dollar lost cross of Ponce and see if you can simply keep with with no questions asked.

I have plans to dive the Hydro Atlantic in that area. There is a dive boat captain in Boca who has offered to take some friends of mine to some cannons off shore there in 300' of water (my friends dive tri-mix), maybe that might not be such a bad place to MD.

Your best bet is to stay out of the water when detecting on the beach in Florida! Our company has admiralty claims off of Florida, and it is a bad thing when people go into the water in those areas with a metal detector. Even I stay out of the water when I decide to detect on the beach in Florida unless of course it is in our admiralty claim areas! It is just not worth the consequences if you get caught hunting somewhere you should not be.

Jershark; I dive with my detector all up and down the east Florida coast, and down into the Keys. However, I do try to avoid all the known lease areas as much as possible. Can you please share with us the GPS boundaries of your exploration and search leases so that we may avoid encroaching into your protected leases?

This is my list of sights along the Space and Treasure coast with leases from the State of Florida that must be avoided with a metal detector in hand, and I know that I am missing several of the newer search leases.

DOUGLAS BEACH S26 27.25.3N X 80.16.50W is the center point of a 3,000 yard radius excluding all land west of the mean low tide line.
POWER PLANT S25 27.21.2N X 80.13.65W is the center point of a 3,000 yard radius excluding all land west of the mean low tide line.
ANCHOR WRECK S23 27.48.2N X 80.24.70W is the center point of a 3,000 yard radius excluding all land west of the mean low tide line.
