The Sebastian Fishing Museum in the Sebastian Inlet State Park has a lot of info on the inlet including pics of the inlet pre and post widening. Check them out.

Thanks ! Please post what you have pre 1872 .Sketches/drawings/maps anything...U the Man :) !

First off... you do know... The first people arrived in the area in the mid 1800s... where several attempts by MANY to open a ?cut? or an inlet on the barrier island from the I.R Lagoon to the ocean...

Two guys tried and tried.... with the first to attempt a ?cut? in... well debated... was in 1872... but ... ?

The reason you cannot find early stuff of S. I... is simple... it did not become S.I...until 1884... PRIOR to this it was called "New Haven". so try using this.

Um... best "bone" i can throw you is this...

"The Sebastian Inlet District historical archive".

Did you know about this ?

:)

Dunno... Long before the 1800s explorers made pretty good, pretty accurate, hand drawn maps of the new Worlds they discovered.Guess I'm just not looking in the right place's so far.

I will dig around... see most of any maps that i think would shed the light you want...

Are rolled up in my collection... So bare with me... and i am hoping some others can perhaps chime in before it comes to me going that route... due to an inconvenient timing.

But i will get ya there with a little time work and luck.

:)

Thanks, much appreciated AARC

Ok... what exactly do you want to know / looking for ?

What exact answer do you seek ?

Just the "widening" date ? ? ?

I'm pretty sure it is not a natural inlet. During bad storms and hurricanes the ocean would sometimes cut through for awhile but it quickly filled back in. They have to continually dredge it now so it will not fill in the channel. While used extensively by fishing boats it is of no commercial value as it is too shallow and can get very rough during storms and certain high tide events. I've white knuckled through that inlet many times.
