The Field which Shaun7, Dad & I covered recently whilst it was stubble had a deep plough. We were watching until it got graded down as it was too rough. That day was today & we had 3.5 hours on the field & thats it. As it gets drilled with spring oats tomorrow & he doesn't like us digging up the seed. Shame, many other don't mind, but keeping the farmer happy is more important than grabbing what we can off the field. It will wait.

We couldn't believe the stuff we got:

42 buttons - best 1 day total, since we started counting (but only had 3.5 hours)
17 Roman bronzes
1836 Four Pence
Small bit of hammered
Best 1620s Rose Farthing I have ever found!
1667 George Waple of the Mercers Arms Pub in Towcester (token, first one of this type).
WF - Lead Token - rare with date on it - 1733

Wow, this maybe our last big hitter for awhile!

and they told me years ago it was searched out. We were not expecting this much, as we have covered the same land now for many years!

This was less than a 1/4 of the bottom section before the first lump. We went across the field in a pro like manner

can i see a roman coin like the one i got last week (the one with the circle on the reverse)?

This one is a VOT X, can't remember the Emperor, I thinks its Constantine II. Yours was a fairly rare mint & was VOT XX. But your right it is the same reverse type.

28 good coins only 4 hours

That's an amazing amount of finds in 3 1/2 hours, congratulations.

Too bad about the window closing on that field! :'(

It seems like you and Cru' Dad find buttons like we find zinc pennies here in the states. ;D ;D

A couple questions on the buttons:

Are any of the buttons you find out in those fields worth big $$$, like some of the buttons that are dug in the US? If not, then I would imagine you would term your button finds as "pesky" items in your search for coins/other valuable old relics in the fields.

Amazing year so far for you guys!!

Congrats once again!

A bunch of finds that's for sure, I guess the weather there was great too. Like the tokens the best!

Better than the normal hunt, congrats! HH, Mike

Buttons are not very valuable over here. The rare militia types in good condition (18th century) will make £20 if lucky. You could sell Livery buttons at about 50p each, if lucky.
I don't care for the value of them anyway, all I'm interested in is getting new types for the collection. 1 new type can make my day.
90% of the ones pictured I don't keep (plain, 2 hole & 4 hole).
I started counting because of a request from Woody.

They are a mixed blessing. They are normally a good indicator of a good ancient site, even though its 100s of years in the future, the buttons are a sign of cultivated land. Lots of cultivation began in the Iron Age & continued to the present day. Therefore we like finding buttons, however they sound similar to roman coins & often look like them for a split second.
