Went to a spot that me and my brother have hunted to death. And started digging faint signals and experimenting with the settings on my ctx 3030. There is lots of iron. Ten minutes in and bam. What a beautiful coin. Makes you wonder how much is still there....

Congrats on a really sweet coin! Nice.

Wow, new Jersey copper very cool, good job

Congratulations on the NJ copper, yes it is a 1788, the reverse side (shield) is a Maris v reverse, which was used with two different Obverse dies (Horse/Plow and Date side). One is Obv is very common and one is rare, So it is either a 1788 Maris 66-v or more likely a 1788 Maris 67-v. A better photo of the mane area would be a big help in final IDing the variety. You can take a wet q-tip and just gently work around getting the dirt and grime off in the mane area and I can probably get the final ID. I did send you a msg asking for some data on your two NJ coppers. Don

I can see the date and it's 1788. I will attempt to clean soon and will post pic later today. I don't want to damage to coin

Sweet Colonial you saved. That is awesome!:occasion14:

Wow, excellent find. How deep was it roughly? I can't wait to find something like that one day, but I wonder how deep such an old coin might be. I imagine a coin from the 1700's would be pretty deep, no? I don't know if my detector can seek deep enough for a beauty like that one...

It was 8 inches

Great find with some good details remaining. Congrats. I found a 1787 NJ in much worse shape about a month ago.

Pretty amazing you found a second N.J copper, Congrats!!

Hope it cleans up good and you find you have the rarer variety.

SO HE GETS ONE AND THATS OKAY ' BUT NOW HAS TWO , LEAVES ME WITH NOTHING TO SAY. ...NICE...

Looking at the horse's head, it is looking more and more like it is the 1788 Maris 67-v variety, not the rare 66-v. The mouth appears open like on the 67 rather than closed on the 66 and a couple other feature match the 67 and not the 66, but still very hard to tell but personally I am convinced it is the 67 Obverse.. It would be the 12th of that variety reported found in my survey of over 700 NJ coppers, only 1 Maris 66 has been reported, however the 12 in my survey is nowhere near too common of all the coins in the survey, think it is more in the Common to Scarce range in my opinion.. Please email or msg me the state/county found in so I can add it to the survey of ground found NJs and any others you or your brother might have found. Don
