Secret society?

I found this big silver ring 30 years ago and only yesterday "rediscovered" it in the bottom of a drawer. The character looks like a panhandler holding out an upturned hat. There are owls sitting on branches on both sides of the ring. There are no markings on the inside of the band either. Any ideas what this may stand for or is it just an old hippie thing?

I take it to mean "be wise (like an owl) with your money or be broke". For example don't go out and buy a piece of jewelry just because it has a cute animal on it. Oh, wait...

My first thought was; a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

And, it almost has the appearance of a 'seal' type ring, as in, leave a picture by impressing it into something?
