SECRET'S HILL SCHOOL [1857-1913]

Victoria [Australia] was the first colony to institute free and complulsory schooling but this was not achieved without argument, debate and conflict between church leaders, politicians and colonial dissenters.

The first school at Secret's Hill was built in 1857 and exact site unknown. Its structure was like many school buildings on the gold fields. The roof was of shingles and the internal walls were lined with boards up to the height of about 4 foot. The remainder of the walls was constructed of lathe and plaster, with the ceiling with calico. The outside walls were made of slabs.

A new school was built some 400 yard on the other side of the hill in 1872.The new school was a 40 ft by 20 ft wooden school room, at a cost of 357 pounds sterling. The original school site is located on whats a private farm today and access was denied. :( :( :(  bummer The second site is on public reserve. ;D ;D ;D

The school closed in 1913 and the building was relocated to Bendigo[tinpan town] and used as a church hall until 1933.At this time the building was again relocated to another unknown site.

Also on 3rd of January, 1862 reported in "The Inglewood Advertiser" a 52 lb gold nugget was found in the gold-diggings, not far from the school [org site] These gold-diggings are on that private farm too.  :( :( :( bummer

After spending most of the day at the local skatepark with my son and 200 teenages. I needed some me time. ;D  It,s spring here and sunset is not until 7pm and daylight saving is still a month away. The skatepark fundraiser was for improvements, finished about 3.30pm and free B.B.Q  lunch  ;D

The second school site is only a 25 minute drive from my place and located in a regrowth forrest on a public reserve. This means you can m.d all you like without permission . ;D ;D ;D

I went for a look and swing for a couple of hours ,only got a couple of hits on the minelab and mostly brassy junk.I did get a nice little buckle [brass] off a once school bag  and found five school pottery and depression glass ink wells.

The research for this protect was conducted by myself and some of the info and pictures were supplied by a family friend, Mrs Emmly Lee (87) Thank you Emm.The first part of the post was written by my wife Tracey while i endured the local skatepark fundraiser. Thanks Trace

The ink wells are soaking in water overnight, as they are full of yellow pipe-clay and i will post pic of the finds tomorrow. Its very late here and its time for Tin to get some sleep.

Hi Tinpan,

Thanks for the extra pictures, they are great..... love the pottery.

I was in school in England ;D up till 1973, left when I was 13 yrs old..... But in about 1967 when I was in junior school, we had inkpots ::) they were pictured as below.... Dont laugth at my artistic drawing ;D the pots were about 1" high x 1 1/4" round at the top. At the time, we were could only use blue ink, which still till today I will not use :'( this only lasted about 1 - 1 1/2 years, then we were allowed fountain pens or cartridge pens. Then in about 1970, we could use Biro pens. The teachers always told us that to write perfect English, you had to use Ink... It was the proper way.... what what!!
Since then I have never used or owned an Ink pen, or written in that crappy blue ink ::) Umm some call it rebellion :o

By the way, my certificate from the Queen is still at the printers, they say it takes time for the BLUE INK to dry ;D
God bless
Peter
