Cool, thanks! I like to save my bits anyways, but it's nice to know about their use when they were new. Any clue on age, or were pieces like this used long enough that it's difficult to put a time period to?

Can you please post another photo or two of the iron item with the ring and some measurements. Is the bar going through the middle round or square?Thanks

Sure thing!! The oval is 4 1/2 inches long by about 2 1/2 inches wide. The ring is about 2 1/4 inches OD.

Oh, just saw your round/square peg question. Square-ish. There's distinct sides, but heavily rounded corners.

Crossed rifles over an achor - Boy's Brigade pin? Clean it up a little more and look for the letters B B on it.
