Dug this up yesterday at a civil war spot we go to frequently and was excited as it was the first piece of artillery I've found so far. I believe it's too small to be a cannonball but too large to be canister shot which leads me to believe it could be grapeshot but I'm not well informed on artillery pieces so that's why I'm asking here. The dimensions are about 2 inches in diameter and it weighs 1.1 pounds.

I am no expert in this department but there is such a thing as a 1 pounder swivel gun or cannon so you just might have a 1 pound solid shot there. I believe these were used more in pre Civil War times. Any War of 1812 or Revolutionary War history in the area? Cool find!

It was dug in the Cartersville, Ga area and to my knowledge, there is no war of 1812 or revolutionary war history there but along the hill, we found this we have found carved bullets, bullets, buttons, j hooks, and a snake oil salesmen token so we believe it was probably a camp of some sort.

Where's TheCannonballGuy when you need him. :laughing7:

Nice find, hope it turns out to be the real deal.

I'm thinking it came from a 12 lb. stand of grape. They were around 2" and weighed in at about 1lb. I hope TCG can chime in

Looks like a canister ball. There were many types. A 12-lbs Napolean round contained 9-balls.

Recently was researching case and canister shot. Canister shot is normally iron, at least from what I’ve read. Your picture looks like iron. From some charts I’ve seen on treasurenet, based on your measurements, it’s close to a 32 pounder canister shot or a 12 pounder grape shot. But I’m no expert, I just read through a lot of posts on this site. CBG is who I consider the expert on large artillery and most civil war finds I see posted on here. I’m sure he’ll chime in.
