Since I have been low on cash but like a drug addict, that needs to fill my fix, I have been buying a box or two here and there of pennies. Although I have found that going through pennies is pretty painful and filthy, I have been separating the Wheats, Coppers and "82 and after".

My question is, I see on ebay they seem to sell for 1 1/2 times ($5 sells for $6-7, $10 sells for $13-15, etc...) the face and was wondering if ebay is the only current market people are buying and selling copper pennies?

What is the main reason(s) people are buying since they can't melt right now? Hoping for copper to start skyrocking in the next 5-10 years? Holding them for 20-30 years to pass along hoping they will be work "big bucks"?

Just curious and didn't want to hijack anyones conversation on the subject.

I see it alot too...I myself hoard my coppers..But even thou its Illegal to melt curriency...its not stopping anyone from doing it...I think its funny how it is illegal to melt down "MY" money..which is MY Personal Property....But for some reason on eBay they can sell counterfiet coins from China with no problems..Hmmm

A lot of people in the 1960s thought it was silly to save out silver coinage. At the time it was illegal to melt down silver coinage (such laws have since been repealed). Copper is simply the next thing to be debased. While I myself don't buy boxes of pennies and sort through copper, I do sort through copper in my pocket change and won't spend any copper cents (or nickels) for the simple reason they are worth more than face value. While I don't think that copper will ever hit the levels of silver, I do think that it is prudent to save your copper coins because the exact same things that people are saying about copper is what they said about silver back in the 60s, if you could go back to the 60s and save out all the silver you found in your change, wouldn't you do so? If you don't save your copper you are essentially doing the same thing.
