Hi All,
I've had to do some prioritising these last few days - whether to go back to the 120 acres where I found the Elizabethan hammered or to go to the 8 acre pasture field on my local farm where I'd found the 2 Roman brooches and Charles I shilling earlier this year (now ploughed though, rolled and set). Which would you do? Yep the Roman did it for me too!
It wasn't long before I dug this beauty:
Antoninus-Pius-Sestertius.webp

A sestertius of Atoninus Pius (I believe) and if I'm reading these books right and it is Antoninus that clear 'XIIII' relates to the year 150AD - Is that Salus standing feeding a snake on the back? - I know you experts will put me right if I'm wrong! I think there is enough detail to give it a positive ID. Weighs 19.5g and around 30mm in diameter.

Found another Roman (maybe) but this is well past its ID stage:

Weighs 6.8g around 25mm in diameter.

Other handfull of coins included George III, Victoria, George V, George VI & Elizabeth II:

Some Token with the number '18' (could be date) clearly visible and the letters 'C' and 'B' on the other side - Any Ideas? :icon_scratch:

A few buttons (naturally)

A couple of Musket Balls, Bag Seal, Remains of a Spindle Whorl and an Oval (Nippled) object?

A W.M.R.E. Locomotive badge:

and bits of other stuff, 3 Bullets, etc:

I well pleased I've found another Roman (or 2) -
It would be great if these seeds didn't germinate so quickly! I still may have time to get back to the 120 acres but then again, there's another field just up from this one (only 9 acres) been ploughed, rolled & set too! Next week we put the clocks back and there'll be no time for anything!

Nice looking little coin there. Boy, the farm does not do well to the coins you've found there.

Nice going on the Roman, still lots of detail. Great mix of finds from one small field. :icon_thumright:

Yes - David I concur with the Antoninus Pius assessment - the profile is quite right - I bet Cru
will confirm soon enough . Argentium.

Hello David!
:hello:
Beard finished in a point can only be the emperor Marcus Aurelius ..... ::) I bet most Sestertius by Marcus Aurelius (Emperor Antoninus Pius had a round beard ).
Congrats for the Sestercius.

Congrats for the Sestercius.
Thanks for that Hispan. Marcus was his Son-in-law right? Nice one.
Does the 'XXIIII' now relate to the year 169AD?
Best wishes.

I agree with Hispan, it does look like the Marcus Aurelius he has pictured. A very sweet find either way you cut it! :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

If , was his successor in the Empire.
-Antoninus Pius, ruled the Roman Empire from 138 to 161.
-Marcus Aurelius was Roman Emperor from 161 until his death in 180.
Emperor Commodus ,also manufacture very similar Sestercius also had a long beard ... but thrown out and not inward as the Emperor Marcus.

-The short beard and round = Antoninus Pius.
-The long beard and to within = Marcus Aurelius.
-The long beard and thrown out = Commodus.
Greetings !

Nice bunch of finds & the Ses. is in better than average condition :hello2:

'Some Token with the number '18' (could be date) clearly visible and the letters 'C' and 'B' on the other side '

Its a foreign coin I found before but can't quite remember if its Belgium or Dutch or :icon_scratch:
Its is the date 18??

The 'crown' coin reminds me of a 1 cent Netherlands (Kingdom) coin. (Crown and Crowned Shield). Appropriately, the left side of a large "W" can be seen just to the right of the '8'; the balance of the 'W' can easily be imaged.

Don....

Nice finds....

... sit and wonder about who in history may have held them in their hands...
That's what I keep thinking, what they looked like, how many hands it exchanged before it was lost in the earth for good, what was bought with it, and then, what happened in that spot above ground from then on until I came along with the detector!
Hurry up and bring in that Time Machine! :D
