Shaun7 Sunday's Finds..........

Shaun7 is having modem issues, so I'm posting his Sunday finds for him.

He battled though the weather all day & got some great finds.

Not sure how many scrappy romans (although one was pretty good), but about 5.

Best find was a 14th century Heraldic Stud (shield shaped with chequered pattern). It went on the horse leather of important families. Dad & I have only had about 3-4 of these. They are rarer than the Horse Pendants.

A very unusual Georgian Pipe Tamper with match strike on one end. I think early 18th Century due to the narrow head which went in the small clay pipe bowls.

Plus a nice 'S' shaped buckle.

Those are some great finds! The snake buckle is very nice and that rare buckle is even better, I have not seen many of those found but it seems a few have come from the Crusader area. Congrats and nice finds guys. HH, Mike

yeah, forgot to mention the other buckle, nice for shaun7 to find it whole.

The field is now complete, so shaun7 needs to work on finding some land nearby & we need to scratch around ourselves

Well spotted, it is more dragon like (exactly how I decribed it to shaun7 when found). Most are snake like & some are swan like. I have found a few over the years but none which is hollow construction. When turned over it looks like a 2 piece construction (when all others are solid). ie. it is a stamped thin piece of copper-alloy, almost like the fake Victorian sash buckles. First example I have seen like this & difficult to date, as the style looks earlier than the construction

Tried a couple of fields that had very little potential & the farmer charges £5 a day. There are Saxon coins recorded in the area & its just a matter of finding the right farmer & land.
