17 degrees today..blowing hard...and spitting snow.
What do you do on a day like this??...you go huntin'.
I had a new weapon to try out and this was the perfect site to do it at. Nothing but oldies here and they are very deep or hiding in iron...or BOTH.
Picked up "Heavy D" or "SwampThing"...or just plain old Darrell
...whatever I feel like callin' him...about 9:00 this morning and made the trek through the frozen tundra to the cabin site.
My new weapon...the monster 15 x 18 SEF coil of which I was honestly skeptical of.
I have never used a coil of this size and truthfully didn't feel it would be sensitive enough to hit tiny coin sized targets because of it's size.
The coiltek 15" WOT is as big as I've used...and it was still sensitive..but this dog was 15" x 18"... so I was unsure.
I must admit it took some getting used to. It was like swingin' a weighted garbage can lid.
However it also covered a lot of ground and it covered it fast.
It didn't take long before I had my first target to dig which ended up being an old copper wedding band from 9" down.
About an hour later I got a sweet faint "warbler" but it was a lower tone and I thought it sounded like an indian head.
I decided to piddle with gain settings like I do with other coils so I dropped it from 10 to 8...and the signal was still there although nowhere as clear and distinct.
I then dropped it to 7 and can honestly say NO WAY I would have stopped to investigate the sound I heard.
One more drop to 6...and the signal had completely vanished.
The exact reason I run my gain jacked at 10...just my personal preference.
Then I decided to dig and sure enough...from 10" down came an 1892 injun' which is what the sound from this coil told me it was.
After 3 hours or so I really began to like the sweet sounds the 15 x 18 SEF was giving me. I was impressed with the minimal falsing over deep iron. In fact I got some "investigate me" chirps but was 90% certain they were deep iron chirps.
Just to be sure...I decided to dig 3 of them and sure enough...they turned out to be iron.
I now had some confidence in this monster coil...and of what it was capable of telling me.
About 3/4 of the way through the hunt I got another one of those deep chirps...but this one had some high "warbly" sound to it. 8)
The monster 15 x 18 nulled from every angle and pass...but right in the center of each and every null I got a tiny window of sweet warble.
I then decided to dig...or rather chisel into the frozen ground with my Lesche Pic Ax. I got down a long way and decided to run the probe...and got nothing but a null.
I then REchecked the hole with the SE/15 x 18 combo...and again got a nice tiny warble in the middle of the null.
I dug a little deeper and from 9" down came a perfect 4" square of rusted flat iron.
I got ticked off
because I KNOW what I had heard from this coil through my headphones so I ran the probe again....BINGO!...an absolute screamer now.
Heavy D held the piece of rusty iron which had covered the entire bottom of the hole...while I began to carefully scrape away some frozen dirt as best as I could.
From 10" down and completely underneath this chunk of iron came the big grayish/silver disc.
I could not see the date but could make out the outline of a seated coin...and a quarter at that.
This big coil ROCKS...and I will be using it OFTEN in open areas.
Well we went back to hunting with only an hour or so left because my fingers and toes were about to break off.
I kept glancing over at Heavy D to see how he was doing with his E-Trac but he wasn't finding anything.
Well...at least nothing but iron anyway.
Now I say that in jest of course because I LOVE his E-Trac. I have the same problem with the pro coil though...lots of iron finds
True I have found some nice deep silver with the pro coil but I do find myself digging more iron and chasing some ghost holes with it.
He started whining around about wanting to use my 10 x 12 SEF which I had in the car
...and also the usual B.S. about how his E-Trac was cursed
....I was lucky....he was hungry
...etc.
I then switched him machines and put my 15 x 18 SEF on his E-Trac so I could swing the E-trac for a while.
I also then popped my 10 x 12 on my SE for him to use...and he waddled away with a big smile on his face.

Before long he called me over to check a signal for him which was a lower conductor signal. I told him the E-Trac/15 x 18 was saying "solid hit".
He too was getting a nice repeating hit with my SE/10 x 12 combo....so he started chiseling.
From 9" down Heavy D popped out an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent.
I have not seen one of those dug since the Yeti found one many months ago...so I was thrilled for him.
Right before we called it a day...I was able to get one more keeper while using Darrell's E-trac with my 15 x 18 SEF coil on it.
It turned out to be a worn old 1880 Injun' from 10" deep.
What a great day with a cool friend and an awesome coil.
Heavy D popped out an 1858 Flying Eagle so he was stoked.
I ended up with the ancient copper wedding band...2 Injuns' 1880, 1892...and the 1853 Seated Quarter.
Didn't realize til after I rinsed it off at home that it was an 1853.
Also realized at that point that it was holed.
Oh well...still a thrill to find.
I will definitely be putting some time on this 15 x 18 SEF coil at some of my more open sites. While it is obviously not a coil most of us could swing for an entire day...it should definitely be "swung when possible" because it goes DEEEEP....covers a lot of ground....is sensitive to coin targets...and for me...can SEE deep silver engulfed in iron. After just one hunt with it I'm looking forward to the next.
