Dug up a nickel in a front yard that the city has been putting in new water main lines and new hydrants in the subdivision.
It was less than 5 feet from a big oak tree on a corner lot. Before the subdivision was built this area was part of a ranch. Less than 200 yards to the east is a bayou, and about 60 yards to the NW was an old small creek. This part of the ranch was very wooded with big pine trees and oak trees.

Sheild nickels were made from 1867-1883 without the "rays" on the back.
With my old eyes ( even using a cheater magnifying glass and a 10X loupe) I can't tell the date.

Here are some pictures. What year do you see?????

Last digit looks like an "8".
Therefore could only be 1868 since 1878s were issued in only proof.
1868 was also the second highest mintage, so more likely to be this one.
That's my guess.
