Relic Hunting
Went to one of our sites today in between rain showers and dug a few keepers. This site has produced several war of 1812 buttons as well as some civil war era relics. My first find was the big dandy button. It rang up nice and high and when I first saw the silver I thought for sure it was a coin! Happy with the button but we dig so few coins down here got to admit I was a little disappointed.

The best find today was the shield shaped buckle. Really cool but I don't know anything about it, what it came off of or the age. Any input will be greatly appreciated! A few buttons, another little buckle, some lead and relics. Fun short hunt between rain showers! Thanks for looking and hope everyone digs some treasures this weekend.

I don't think there is very much factual information about these shields. I have dug several of them over the years and all that I have found have been in early sites. I dug one at a 1788 fort site. My personal feeling is that they were attached to a horse bridle, but that's just a guess. Anyway, good finds.

FEW GUYS HAVE FOUND THEM ON OTHER FORUMS AND AGREE WITH YOU - THEY SAY THEY ARE NOT NECESSARILY MILITARY

It's a great looking buckle and the design would lead itself to something horse saddle related. Whatever it may be I really like it

The slightly off-set bar points to a horse related leather strap buckle. I thought them to be 19th C.

Thanks Tenn digger, Trapperart, Casper, Stefen, Ahab and Cru for the comments. I like the buckle too, no matter what it came off of! Headed out today for more diggin. Good luck out there!
