shield nickel questions!!

Hey guys, I need some help identifying a year on my shield nickel I had just gotten. Bought it as a 1882 but I think it looks like an 1883. Please help so I can collect it as the right year.

The way that the last number is shaped; it looks to me to be an '82.

I'll take a stab at it. Never tried this before but think it'd be fun.

Here is an obvious 82, notice how the 2 font winds up on the lower right? I think thats what makes it look like a 3. The 2 must have the angled line from the upper right to lower left and a 3 wouldn't. Also the 2 would have that little notch at the bottom left.


Here is a maybe 2 or 3, (Seems a common issue)...notice on the right lower corner the curve up? That makes it look like a 3, but the notch is obvious, this is a 2.


Here is your coin, enlarged and enhanced to find edges. I see the line from the upper right to lower left (pointed with arrow) and another area in the lower left that shows where the notch would be. I'd say its a 2.

I also felt that it was an 1882 versus an 1883 for the same reason. However, the scratch on the plastic holder somewhat made it difficult to be sure.
