Was hunting a new area with the girlfriend about a quarter mile from an 1800s ship building area. The original owner owned the field I was in and the ship building the spike is brass and huge. Do you guys think it is a ships spike? Thanks for looking 20171124_202110.webp20171124_202129.webp

That’s in remarkable condition. I did some research and I found that a “quick” way to identify the spikes is, if it has a round head, it dates pre-18th century. Square head and square body, 1800s.

I am by no means an expert on this, but it’s just what I’ve read up on. Others may know for sure for you. I’d say, you have yourself an awesome 1800s ship spike.

Definitely not a Railroad Spike :coffee2:

I'd say unless You or Someone took a wire Wheel to it and polished it up,
so it no longer has the proof of age,
It's a recent production made as a souvenir.
is there a souvenir shop in the area, that Some kid may have picked it up at.
Then
lost it, when he lost interest in carrying it around ?

Way too shiny for me to confirm. Never make em look new, it spoils them.... imo.

Of course it's always up to the Finder :icon_thumright:
Beauty is always in the Eye Of the Beholder .

But I personally like when they can be proven to be old just by Looking :laughing7:
I only clean spots I expect to have Identifying Marks or Dates on coins & relics.

As said before, Now that it is Cleaned, it would probably take a Professional metallurgist
to tell it from one made Today.

Nice Find Though :coffee2:
