Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Went to help a friend who is getting ready for surgery tomorrow and for being such a good guy she let me hunt her monster yard. I ended up only having about 30 minutes of daylight and found 11 of the bullets the knife and some strange oblong looking item that seems to have some type of fuse in the end :icon_scratch: All I ended up hunting was a 10x10 area. This was from a one time battle and was a rear guard position. I have pulled around 30 bullets from there in the past.
The other items are from N. Ga and Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga that I found the other day.
Nothing spectacular but fun hunting :icon_sunny:
Thanks for looking !

From a 10x10 area. I wonder if the knife is period?

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

:hello:

What's going on Richard? I was going to call you the other day and shoot the breeze with you buddy. Looks like you found some time to get out. That knife looks like it could be period era to me , sure. Man, that last item looks like a cartridge shell that overheated/burned eh? :dontknow: From what it looks like on this en anyway. I went out digging a little this past Saturday at Maggies new facility out there. I thought it would surely hold something good, but I honestly feel the early 1800's cabin was brought in at some tine in the 1900's. The old lady that lives near swears it wasn't, but most people don't know their history these days. You would think at a 100 year old kids camp, it would be full of silver at least. I don't think people had much money in these parts. Come on up and see us sometime Richard.

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Richard, you have been busy digging good relics. There is a folding bowie knife with the same shield as yours in Crouch's relic book on page 73 that he says is of English manufacture. If you don't have his book, email me and I'll make a pic and send to you. Like Tabdog and Mike, I think ity's period. The whatsit in pic #4 looks like a brass cartridge with the bullet inserted backwards into it. Just my guess from your pic. Good job recovering relics from where my Great Grandfather fought with the 8th TN CSA Inf. almost in your yard (as you know), Quindy.

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Phil Sheridan ordered this attack. The 40th Indiana and the 97th of Wagners Ohio brigade were to attack the retreating confederates. They caught the tail end and captured 200 prisoners and 2 wagons. They then continued on after the retreating Rebels.
Bates set up a rear guard with two artillery guns for the retreating Confederates. The union walked right into the trap.
The Ohio Regiment had 149 officers and men killed and the Indiana lost 40 men.
45 per cent of the men engaged in this one spur of the moment attack were now killed. One diary account describes the iron cannister as "like flocks of wild geese flying past".
This is not camp lead but lead from this one action. It is awsome history to me.
Yeah the doughnuts are always a treat !!
Happy Hunting!!

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Nice knife and bullets. I hate the shotgun shells.

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

WOW Richard, it's great to find that kind of stuff but when you actually have an accounting of the event to which you can place your finds, THAT'S awesome! Congratulations and well done!!

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Thanks everyone. Battle sites are easier to pin down then campsites. Unless you are on a camp say like Quindy where his finds and research end up telling a story.
I appreciate the kind comments.

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

Richard, could the second whatsit be the tip of a cane? HH, Quindy.

Re: Short CW hunt Tn & Ga 2-27-11

No Vol it has inside it almost like some type of old thermostat looking thing trapped in the end. I know that is not what it is. It reminds me of like a fuse. I need to take some more better pics. Thank you though for your interest.
