Thursday I was running late to get to my rental house renovation but couldn't resist stopping at one of my usual producers.
The teller went to the back and brought out the little box from their coin counter, counted out $38 worth of halves, and said "I think there is some silver in here" (I had already seen it).
Got 2 90% and 2 40% Kens for the stop.
Later I stopped at one of my other banks and was told they had $431 in their bag but couldn't sell it 'till it was full. I asked if I could top it off and the teller I was speaking to said that would be fine. I always try to throw in there that me buying the bag is good for both of us cause I get halves and they don't have to bother sending it back to the Fed. Another teller (older and angry-looking) took on a real snotty tone and said "Well, you're just gonna bring 'em back aren't you?" I looked right at her and said no, I would be keeping them. I was pleasant but my tone probably conveyed that that was possibly the dumbest question ever and that I felt offended by the accusation. To be fair she probably has had others do that but not me, who she has not dealt with before. She quickly became busy with other things after that as the other tellers continued their conversation with me that she had interrupted. Normally I'm nice as can be even when dealing with rude tellers and I don't like burning bridges but...
1. I do not routinely get halves from this bank. It's my main checking account bank and I don't order or anything, just grab what they have available.
2. I don't deal with this teller when I go in, she usually just works the drive-thru anyway.
3. I have a good relationship with the other tellers and the manager, who have all been there longer and know me and my ways.
4. I figure she's a silver block anyway and was just mad that I was taking the bag she was gonna snag later.
Anywho, I went Friday and topped the bag off. I could see a '64 and a '67 looking back at me so I knew it wasn't a total waste of time even those were the only ones in there. Unfortunately I had to work all day on the house so it was killing me not being able to search.
After searching everything it was short by $3.00 in halves but had $9.12 in other coinage so the bag totaled $1,006.12.
Total keepers:
5 90% Ken's
16 40%'s
1 very impaired 1980-S Proof
1 100 Shekel (I think, as the inscription is mostly in Hebrew) coin from Israel.
1 100 denomination something from Greece (it was dated 1990 so 100 Drachma's I think)
and 1 Jamaican .50 cent piece (1975)
Not bad for $431 (a little less since it was short) in halves. I don't normally like to top off a bag that isn't more than half full cause it's a bit depressing already knowing that more than half the coins have already been skunks but I'm glad I did this one.
