should I get a box of halves or two boxes of dimes

I'll have an extra $500 to use each week so I'm trying to decide if I should get a box of halves or two boxes of dimes. The last three boxes of dimes from my pick up bank have produced. Box one had 3 roosies, box two had a merc and 3 roosies, and box three I did tonight and found 1 roosie. I also did a box of halves from the bank tonight and it was a skunk.

I figure if I do two boxes of dimes and they are consistent I should get between 2 and 8 silver dimes a week, but if I do the box of halves I could very easily get skunked each week. On the other had I could miss out on a good box of halves.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Change it up when certain ones are producing better.. My dimes have been horrible this week I did 16 boxes and found only 4 Rosies..hopefully my halves treat me better tomorrow

Yeah, if dimes are producing for you right now, keep doing the dimes. When they stop producing, go to halves.

I would order the halves... around here atleast you can go into any number of banks and walk out with a box of dimes, but never can with halves... why not do dimes on other days, inbetween pickups of halves?

Thats what I was doing... but have given up mostly on dimes... they were killer for me before the new year where i averaged 1.3 per box, but since the new year, 25 boxes and 5 rosies to show for it

The dimes will likely be more consistent, but you have a much better chance of a big score with the halves.

Ditto, I never order dimes, but can always get a box or two from most branches. Good fallback when your halves don't come in...

Over 5 years time, my average for halves is around 1 silver per $1,000.

My running average for dimes is 1 per $130.

I looked through 2 boxes of halves yesterday and came away with 4 40% and 1 90%. This is far and away my biggest haul and it is not representative of my half dollar searching. That said: I don't think you can go wrong either-way. Order up your halves, look through them, and when you are done: turn them in and get your dimes.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I work a Monday through Friday 9 to 5 so I'm stuck in my office and the general area during that time. I picked up from one bank once a week on a constant basis and I will visit other banks to get boxes of dimes and nickels from time to time. I also get two boxes of halves every week from two other banks so I think I'm going to stick with the dimes while they are still producing.
