should i get a box of pennies dimes or nickels

You want more "keepers" or the possibility of silver/buffaloes? Cents will produce more quantity and nickels are a little easier on the eyes. I do 10X more nickels than cents, but enjoy the cents when I do. Something very satisfying in finding wheats.

It depends on what your after. If you are a collector than you might want to be buying pennies/nickels. However, if your after silver, than you should search dimes/halves.

Just because your a new member here:
The only silver nickels are 35% war nickels minted between the dates of 1942-1945 during WWII

The only 95% copper pennies are minted pre 1982. Keep wheat pennies minted pre 1959 in a separate bag from your copper because collectors pay more for wheats.

The only %90 silver dimes were issued pre-1965

Not all '42 nickels have silver. Only the nickels with mint marks above the Monticello on the reverse are 35% silver.

that and Canada used silver for a few more years then us

Any other copper pennies out there? I do hand sorting by color and have a few that have a total look of old copper but are post 82. Only the odd balls though its usually very visually easy to see the difference I may post them when I get a few min.

nothing post 82 in pennies is copper, they will look the same though as they are zinc in a copper jacket, so you can't really tell just by looking at them you have to check the date.

I see in your goals you have a few Indian Heads listed. I am curious how many $100 dollars of pennies does your avgs tell you until you find one? I've done 5 25$ and have done ok with wheats but was wondering on the avgs on the Indian Heads.

I personally prefer nickels. You can get buffalo nickels or war nickels. And war nickels when you have $1 face value, has more silver in it than any other $1 face value coinage. Pennies are ok, but unless you are into wheats or indian heads its literally a toss up. If you have the funds, do a box of each one. I have done that time and again for fun.

See ya,

Cents: lots of coins for a little cash; copper can be worthwhile if you can find a buyer; wheats
Nicks: buffs & war nicks; Jeff set fun & challenging
Dimes: consistent silver; Mercs fun to find
Quarters: unless you are a Statehood fan, don't waste your time
Halves: $$$ilver; Bens & Walkers; proofs; kennedy set is fun to put together; need a big bankroll to do volume
Try some boxes of all types & find your passion!

Sag, corrected the erroneous statement above. The 2009 cents were minted on zinc core/copper plated planchets, and 95% copper planchets that are the same composition as the 1909 cent. Both are business strikes and can be discerned by weight.

I did not know that. Interesting for sure.

^^^^^^^^ This is a good and qwik answer to your question, basically covered the basics for you. Good luck in what ever you choose! HH, Maverick.

I have done about $450 in cents this year and have found 2 Indian heads.

I think you are all missing a huge thing with the cents Varieties and errors! There are so many varieties out there that are worth a pretty penny! (no pun intended)

Get one of each.

I've been collecting pre '82 cents for years, just for the copper. I just started picking up boxes of halves this week. I don't have a huge bankroll but I do have about $1k in savings that allowed me 2 boxes. So I searched them, with no real luck, then returned them for 2 more boxes. I already had $50 in halves so I can replace what ever I pull out to keep the boxes at $500. My plan is to just rotate my cash with boxes. IMO
