So I will stary by saying I am a nearly textbook newby, I have only really used my detector for a total of 4 hours, at kill devil hills nc.
In those 4 hours i have found mabye 30ish bottle caps in the towel line. Is discrimnation a good idea at the beach. Is putting my coil in the sand a good idea(just flatenng lightly the top layer)? And any other tips

I have a barska winbest master edition metal detector that was given to me a few years back.

p.s. Let me say just to clarify I am not dissapointed, I love getting out on the beach in the cool evening, this is just an addition to it.

Don't know your detector model, but generally the more discrimination you use the less sensitivity you have to smaller low-conductors, such as thin jewelry, gold chains, small pendants, etc. If the sand is filled with trash you could notch out whatever is most bothersome, but it is likely the phase of bottle caps will still sound off as their response varies widely. If the beach is detected heavily by other detectorists, the easy targets are often gone. Best to go slow and listen carefully amongst the ferrous junk for a non-ferrous target. Being in a hurry is often counterproductive - especially in and amongst iron junk.

YES, use discrimination! Set it at just below Nickel.

And when you finally get hooked, please get a better detector. Tesoro Compadre 8" is just $160.00 :occasion14:

What Terry said. Plus, once hooked there are many better detectors for using on the beach.

In case you don't know about this link BE11640 Master Edition Metal Detector - Metal Detectors they have a PDF manual and a tuning video. That may help a little if you use some sample targets and follow their Testing section.

GL & HH.

I would use just enough disc to make a paperclip sound scratchy. A lot of rings are in the foil range below the nickel and you don't want to miss those.
Terry was right about a better detector if the one your using isn't working well. What kind of depth are you getting on those bottlecaps your digging?
I skim across the top of the sand when I beach hunt(coil touching sand).

Neilinfr. I have been finding caps from 1/2- somthing like 5 inches deep.
Yeah ?i am accualy on vacation down in NC so I am accualy very rarly at the beach, I am up in pa.

I Know that I am not the only one searching the beach here, I accually ran into 2 other detectorists last night.

Only discriminate out iron. Do not discriminate out anything else or you can be missing targets. While there are reasons you might disc out other stuff where you are now you only should be getting rid of iron. NC beaches are sanded in and clean right now. Think of it this way:

Iron - Do not dig
Not iron - Dig
Deep iron sound - Dig at least a few inches and test again

On the beach just discriminate out iron (nails). For me when I get a foil sound if i did it depends where It's located on the beach, down in the wet sand, dig, on the dry with all the trash I usually don't, but you will never know for sure it you don't dig.
Looked up your detector, please don't take no offense, but it looks like something Radio shack tried to put out in the mid 70's.
After this "season" is over and your are hook on the sport?, lifestyle? hobbie? step up to 21 century technology and take advantage of the manufacture sales at the end of the year or the deals you can find around Feb to June. Just take a look at the manufactures that are on this site to get an Ideal.
The best place to start is your local metal detector/ Treasure shop.

Simple concise and accurate !

That's not to bad. Your finding coins also I would guess? It seems theres always a lot of hunters.
Look for butt prints in the sand on that towel line your hunting, that will show you where people have been sitting. If you go during the day and have a look, you can get a better view of where everyone is congregating. Enjoy digging stuff up for now, come back on the forum if you wanna take it further and get yourself a better detector.
Enjoy your vacation:occasion14:
