crap, well, since i didnt hit the big one, we went to another place.. where bottles lie..... digin around found about ten, i finally dated the place, not too old, 1930's, well after im cleaning up these old sealed bottles, "most corks a few screws" i relize most are medical......... so now im thinking, what if they buried this stuff in the boonies for a reason??? has anyone ever heard of someone getting sick from things like this???? say u find a old TB dump, is it safe to dig????

I haven't heard of anyone getting sick from digging.I would take caution on any bottle with contents.Pour out the contents away from where you are digging, mostly all I find in the bottles is rain water that seeped in.Be careful about old batteries because of the acid.People dig in old outhouses all the time and I haven't heard of them getting TB.I would worry about getting cut on metal or glass.Do not undercut into a bank of dirt.Unercutting has killed a lot of diggers.VERY DANGEROUS!

Happy hunting!

C,

Fellow gave me a call a few years back.
Said he found the mother load of bottles,
and did I want to come and work it the next
day.

Busy, could not make it.

Read in the paper, two days later, that they
found him laying next to his truck on an old
back road. Body was covered with strange
rash, blisters, open pus sacks that the birds were
feeding on.

Other than that................ ;D :D ;)
Go for it.

have a good un.......

Common' Now Sherm, You'll Be scaring people into Sponsoring a Law
to Protect us From Ourselves.

I can see the Headline already

"Bottle Collecting Banned in 23 States, Pennsylvania Next" :D :D

On the Serious side, I would think anything Sealed in Bottles Would turn Poisonous. However Anything Ground & Rain water hit would be washed away, or Chomped on by all the Creepy Crawlers
over the years.

if you see a 3 headed Earth worm with Antlers, & Large teeth.
Stop Digging ;)

I see no danger at all in opening bottles. I had to dispose of hundreds of chemical bottles that my father had bought from the 20's through the 80's. These bottles held explosives, acids, mercury, and all kinds of unknowns. The guy that hauled the bottles away, if they weren't labeled, would unscrew the lid and sniff the contents. This has not affected his health in any way at all. (So far)

Wow, he sniffed the contents of the unknown bottles? :o :o :o *No thanks, I'll pass, maybe next time, here you try it*

I hope you're kidding there about the poor guy Sherman. Anyway, I haven't heard of anyone catching anything from the contents of old bottles, but yes, I'd be careful about handling them, and keeping the contents from skin contact. You just never know. What I would do though, is, if I cut my hand on old rusty tin or glass, I'd get a tetnus shot, just to be safe. All sorts of germs live inthe dirt, and if dirt was to get into an open wound, be sure to clean it well with detol. or some other antiseptic.

thanks all for the replys;)

Well...don't want to alarm anyone, but you can get a disease called Valley Fever here in California, in the San Joaquin (pronouned san wah-keen) Valley. I knew a woman who was an avid bottle digger. She was digging about 3 feet deep, didn't feel bad at all. A few days later she was in the hospital with Valley Fever. Seems there has to be the right combination of things to get it. Something about humidity, bacteria or something. I don't know the details but I do know she was quite sick for awhile. It took a long time for her to regain her strength. And then there's Hanta Virus from kangaroo rat feces. Those animals often hang out in abandoned cabins in the Western states. That disease can kill ya. Then of course there's the bubonic (black) plague that is found in fleas in the drier areas of the West, but it's not common anymore.

Seriously, don't open and sniff any contents from bottles you dig. That would just be asking for potential trouble. Frankly, I pour out the contents back into the hole from which they came when I'm done for the day.
