Can't be a date but looks like the bottom line; 1520?
 

Thats a really cool looking dog hunting clip thingy. Do you have any idea what it is? It looks complete and not broken, is that right?
 

At first glance the top line looks like it says W.S. Swan and maybe Fitch or Fitchburg underneath that. I am not sure about the "date" at the bottom.

It looks like 1579 to me, it came from a 1750 house. I’m not sure what the number means

It is complete. No idea 🤷‍♂️. Pretty cool looking though
 

It could be the number is something of an ID. It has four holes so it may have been nailed to something (furniture or farm equipment). I found a brass tag once with the farmers name and town on it once before and found out through the internet that I was metal detecting at his old farm site and also found out that he was hit by a train and killed in the 1930s. It would be interesting to research.

I’ve been trying, if that’s the last name on there it’s definitely fitch. That’s pretty cool about your story 👍
