Hi Folks, I took my brother out today to show him about detecting. We went to a School building that dates back to 1881. We dug a few deep square nails but nothing to exciting until I got a 12/45 on the CTX. It showed as being 8" deep and was clean and solid all the way around, all be it faint. Dug my plug and I stuck my pinpointer in, At the direct center of the hole my pinpointer started buzzing so I knew it was more than likely not some rusty halo..lol

Popped another chunk of dirt out and found this little silver ring shining through. I handed it to my brother and told him "clean it up, You will see sterling in there more than likely" He played with it for a minute and said he could not see anything written in it but the inside looked funny. SO I looked at it and I could see the obvious reeded edge from what used to be a coin!!! I was super happy to see this, Never dug one. It is a small ring and had to be made from a dime, Small lady finger or Childs ring.. Finds like this make my mind go wild with thoughts of who might have dropped it, what were they doing when they dropped it, did the ring mean anything, wedding ring? who knows, then being a 1881 school how old was it? was this my first seated coin in the form of a ring? Was it a modern silver coin? I will never no but it I will take it!!

EDIT I did a little research, This ring has to be made out of a Barber, Seated or Capped bust The reeded internal edge was not present after the barber coin, You can see in this video how this one had to be made so the reeded section you see on the ring is on the face of the coin normally not the edge. Heck this could have been me first seated!! I doubt this is old enough out here in CA to be a capped
\ EDIT

Congrats on checking 2 off the ole bucket list. :hello2: Your first seated and your first ring formed from a coin. Those are very cool to find. I was lucky enough to dig one made from a quarter last year.

Thanks, I can't say it is a seated.. but it is one of three possible. Still super excited none the less

Excellent observation , I've made two of these and obviously the milled edge is obliterated in the hammering , whereas the "beaded" rim on an obverse or reverse face would end up inside the band .

I am thinking of making one now just for fun. If I do I will post it up :)

Here's a pic of one I made for my daughter out of a clad dime. Trial run, to see if I could make one out of silver. Easy day project, I spent about an hour on it. I'd LOVE to dig a silver one! Cool finds for sure.

That's a nice find. I didn't even know they made such things!

Wow if you made that in an hour - never having made one before , you have skills . I made two of them - one from a 40 percent silver Kennedy half , the other from a 90 percent Kennedy half. They each took me at least 4 hours , and I've been Silversmithing and making jewelry for ages. Good job.

years ago my best friends dad had a machine shop. he took a nickel, machined the back out and pressed a dime into it.

a two headed coin with two different values. it was very cool. thanks for sharing your ring, it very cool to. marion

I started on a Washington quarter ring last night. I only got about 5 minutes into it before I got a call. I will try to get it a good chunk done tonight.
