Silver & Turquoise

Have'nt been able to get in the water too far because of the wind but this is stuff from the last
couple of days - I found a nice silver & turquiose brooch or maybe it was a necklace - can
anybody tell me how I can get the black stuff off the turquoise without ruining it - Cavedweller

Great job as always. I am not sure on the cleaning and wouldn't want to give you bad information. I am sure some of our experts will have some ideas...

Found this in an article about caring for turquoise which was written by Lee Dobbins who deals in it.

"The preferred means of cleaning native turquoise is to gently wipe it with a soft cloth but there are instances where you may require more intense cleaning and our advice is to use warm soapy water. If the turquoise is set in a piece of jewelry you should avoid submerging it in anything liquid as it can seep into the fissures of the jewelry and cause deterioration years down the road.

One gentle method for cleaning turquoise is to dunk a Q-tip in warm soapy water and swab the jewelry with that - make sure you remove any soapy residue by swabbing again with a clean Q-tip dipped in clean water. Never clean your turquoise in ultrasonic or steam cleaners or use any type of chemical."

Also in another article, I saw that it says to be careful in getting silver cleaner on torquoise.

I'm sure if you have a lapidary club nearby you'd only need to drop in and have someone take a look at it for you, they would probably clean it up for free, I know I'd do it for you at my club, probably use a little tin oxide and buff it gently on a leather wheel, that should do the trick.

Nice finds CD, if you've tried everything else, try a little C.L.R. on a q-tip, it seems to clean everything. It can be bought in any grocery store in the cleaning isle. I use this for tumbling my coins and they come out nice and shiny in no time at all. Good luck.
