I just got my Silver uMax and the past few days I have hit the tot lot and scored about $6 in clad. The first day I was learning the machine and digging a lot of junk. The second day I dug much less junk, more clad, and in much less time. I am liking the machine very much being new to MDing. The only thing I haven't got much better on is determining depth of target. Can anyone give me some tips on how to determine the depth of the target? For the most part I dig a 3-4 inch plug and go from there. Check the hole to see if it is still in there, (most times no, it is a newer park from only the 70's so only expecting shallow clad) then check the plug. The real pain in the ass ones are the ones just under the surface stuck in the grass roots. I try and dig clean plugs to keep the area nice but a few plugs got butchered. I am hoping to avoid this so any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

For newer parks and tot lots you should pinpoint and pop the coin out without digging a plug. Insert the screw driver where you have pinpointed the coin and when you touch the coin you should go under it and pop it out. Saves time allowing you to recover more coins per outting and leaves less mess.

Tell It Sandman.Good advice .A coin probe is a great tool for tot-lots.

You can determine depth by raising the coil and x-ing. If you raise the coil a good bit before you lose the signal, it's shallow. If you lose the signal right away, it's a deeper target.

A pinpointer will get you right on the coin. Cliff

Good advice has been given. Wait until some day you think it's a coin and it ends up being a cool ring!

the video's great! If you have the manual for your uMax theres a little diagram and instructions on how to pop coins. I go for older coins and dont want to scratch them, so i made a probe out of brass rod from a hobby shop and rounded the end with a file. i use that to find the coin, because im not good enough at pinpointing yet, then i use a screwdriver(with the tip rounded like a spade) to bring it to the surface. It's pretty easy with a little practive and the right tools.
