Was going stir crazy even though I’m considered an “essential employee,” so I took the Simplex to some dirt mounds that were dumped on a nearby property. No coins, but I found a brooch I thought was pretty cool as well as a HAWKEYE cap gun. Any help determining the age of those two items would be greatly appreciated. (The spoon was found on a separate hunt.) Be safe, and happy hunting.

Not sure why the images are sideways. Sorry.

Howdy! Interesting finds for a pile of dirt..:icon_thumleft:

There is an adjustable setting on your Iphone6 for the image size. I believe yours is set
to a larger setting, making for very large file sizes and huge images. Images would
post better (correct side up) if you reset that to something along the lines of 1000x800 pixels
(or thereabouts). Images would still be plenty big for internet use without any degrading of the
image, and they would load and post much faster.

Here are your pics reduced to 1000 pixels on the long side.

Nice!

The Hawkeye cap gun reminds me of my first find last year: a Zinc (or zinc plated) "Dick" cap gun from the 50's or 60's. I wonder if yours is zinc as well? That might explain it's good condition.

I think your cap gun is from the 50's, but that is only anecdotal evidence from the description of a similar toy listed on ebay.

I was thinking 50s too, also from anecdotal evidence on the internet. Was just hoping someone might be a cap-gun expert haha. I think you might be right about it being zinc. If I'm remembering correctly, it rung up about the way a nickel does on this machine. Solid signal with slight jumps (probably in the trigger area).

I'm kind of wondering if the dirt was excavated from a burned down house. I found some pretty large bits of slag along with these other finds. Also, found bricks marked "ALAMO." Preliminary research on brick manufacturing seems to indicate that they were from the Harbison-Walker company which operated between 1935-1942. A friend's son found a silver Roosevelt dime on top of one of the mounds. I'm just trying to gauge how old this dirt is. Can't find anything about the brooch or what kind of flower it is. 12 petals, 8 stamen, almost seems like the petals could be spun at one point, the stamens remaining in place.

Awesome relic hunt, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Definitely did not ring up like a nickel... I was mistaken. High 90s on the Simplex.
