Skipped the 1800's and went to 1700's

Hi all. Winter is coming so I am trying to get in as much hunting time as I can. I went back to the cornfield that gave me the '60 Roosevelt and the old roundball last week. The first inch of the ground was frozen after dipping into the 20's last night, but I was determined to get what I could. The first target was the larger ball. I finished that pass and made a couple more. The ATP gave me a good signal of 71 on the vdi and showed 2 inches. I turned the plug over and saw a large green coin. "Yes! A large cent. Closed out the season with an 1800's coin!" was my thought. I put it away in my pouch and made a few more passes, getting the small ball ( anyone else think it's a pistol ball? ), the bullet cartridge and shotgun headstamp. I got home and posted quick pics on What Is It sub forum and members have identified the coin as a George II half penny. I have done a little research and found it's a 1700's coin! My oldest prior to this was a 1902 V nickel, so you can imagine how happy I was with this hunt.

The round balls weigh 390 and 151 grains and are .611 inches and .477 inches diameter. Thanks for looking!

Awesome local find! I love hunting my little field of dreams, almost a guarantee that everything i dug is at least 150 years old!

Thanks! You've found flat buttons there, haven't you? Do you remember the vdi for them? I have been digging foil and up. Would like to find some.

You definitely have something to beat now because it dates 1729-1739.

Early buttons can literally come in anywhere on the scale so just keep digging.

ive found tons of flat buttons, at least 70, id say dig anything above 40, heck I dug a 1915 buffalo nickel the other day at 43, I think the combination of old, and possibly fertilized soil changes the vdis a lot. my indian head I dug the other day was a 62, that's usually aluminum scrap at other places. I dig anything repeatable over 40 now, and am questioning whether or not I should start digging lower numbers. Problem is on my site there is a TON of nails and iron scrap

Congrats on the KG II, definitely colonial stuff there, and yes I believe you have a pistol ball and a musket ball. you are on a good site, keep hammering it. Some days we get out and hunt for hours before the finds start coming and then, if we are lucky they come fast and furious. You have the right ingredients for some great finds there, good luck.

Congrats on making it to the 1700's. dig it all!

I dig anything that isn't iron way out in the fields...by the roads I sometimes skip lower targets if there is a ton of can shrapnel.....

Congrats on the large copper!

Good going. That is a big jump, nearly 200 years.

Congrats on your oldest coin! Yep dig it while you can, HH!

Nice going on your oldest copper, it always a good day out when an oldie comes out of the dirt.

Holy crappe'!!! That's fantastic. :occasion14: Way to go Old Dude.

The laurel leaves in the crown at top of the head as well as the "II" both seem to be in the right place for the "young head" version, don't they? Thanks again!

Big Congrats on making it to the 1700's! That's an awesome coin, Way to go! :icon_thumright:

Congrats on the great find! You must have gotten the AT Pro, shortly after I did.
At first, I had doubts about it but I have a few hundred hours on it now, some great finds and it is awesome.
Good luck & HH
