Last week I had three different banks order me 2 boxes of halves for each of them. I only have a $1000 to do CRHing with, so it was a scramble to search then dump. 2 - 90% and 3 - 40% in first boxes. 1 - 40% and a 87D in second boxes .

Now the 3rd banks set of boxes I was so used to edge searching then I would look for dates, proofs, known errors. What I have done consistently with every coin I ever view, I rotate to view correctly then flip bottom to top to look for a rotated die error.
Yes, I hit the jackpot, a medal alignment, 180 degree rotated die error. It well made up for the effort and disappointment of a skunk box. Now everyones going lets see a photo, any suggestions on how to show you this little gem?

If you mean how to show the obverse and reverse at the same time, it's easy, use a mirror. What year was the error half?

Not to rain on your parade, but just make sure it isn't one of those magician coins; that can be put back together with the reverse anything from 0-360 degrees off of what the obverse is.

Simply drop it on the table, and if a magician coin, with sound like a plastic thud.

Here's to keeping my finger's crossed for you.

hello again,

yes , you might have rained on my day. table drop sound , very close to any other half that I drop, so not a real indicator with this coin. So I pop out the 10x loupe, my strongest magnification, and hence on the reverse along the inside of the outer rim I am seeing a line all the way around. If it is a magians coin they did one good job making it. Think I will take to coin shop for a second opinion. By the way it is a 88P half. The highs and lows of the search, might have to go look closely at my rotated Jefferson nickle, but I think that one is a real keeper. :-\

take care, photogame

Sorry about that but those are fun to find anyway!

Last week I got 2 magician's coins. Only one problem one was missing the reverse side. Also its a pain to open them.

Easy way to open a trick coin (aside from using a bang ring) is to put it in a GLASS jar and shake it hard. On the really good ones, it can take up to a minute of shaking for them to come apart, but they usually come apart with 5 seconds.

When I was a kid I had a "squirting nickel", Looked real and made out of a real coin. You would hold it in a glass of water and squeeze it a few times to fill it up. I doubt this is what you have but your post reminded me of it after the others started talking about the magicians halves.
