[td]After having searched through $7,110 worth of dimes, I figured I'd get a Whitman Coin book (1946-1964 Dimes). I'm going to make it my goal to fill it by the end of the year! To the right is my "Most Wanted" List to help keep track of my progress. I want all of my finds to be from CRHing, so I won't be purchasing any of them. Here goes nothing! [/td]

Persistence Pays Off: FIND #41

Today was a very special day for me. I came into the week having found 495 silver Rosies in my CRHing career. During Box 4, I declared to my wife that I had found #500 only to pull a Swiss 1/2 Franc out of the roll...rookie mistake! :sadsmiley:

When I found the actual 500th Rosie, I looked at the reverse and saw no mint mark. I thought, "man, how fitting would it be to flip over a 1953 right now to fill my final Philly hole." It was not meant to be; however, something even better was on the way. With just three dime rolls remaining on the day, I opened the next roll to reveal a silver dime. Looked at the mint mark first as usual to reveal a 'D'. Thought to myself, "Well, it's gotta be a '49 or '55"...AND IT WAS!!! 1949!!! :hello2:

It's been 90 long days between finds...I was beginning to wonder. I know it's only going to get tougher with each hole that gets filled, but yeah, really special day. What does the 500th FDR milestone mean in the grand scheme of things? As I've said before, 918 is the magic number. On average, a CRHer should need to find 918 silver Rosies to complete the 48 coin set. Today's six FDRs just put us that much closer to our end goal. 41 Rosies down...7 to go!

Big week finding the 1949D. I reattacked my predictive model that GMan and I worked on back in 2013. He suggested that there be some sort of geographical factor in the model to adjust for if you're in the San Francisco, Denver, or Philadelphia operating zones. Well let me tell you, I was finding an abnormally large number of 'D' FDRs when I lived fairly close to Colorado. Now that I'm not terribly far from Philadelphia, I'm finding an abnormally large number of no mint mark FDRs. This year, after 116 FDRs found, my distribution of finds looks like this:

P - 54.31% (39.29% of set)
D - 40.52% (56.33% of set)
S - 5.17% (4.38% of set)

Basically, my updated model is showing me that the top 5 toughest dime for me to find based on my region of the country are 1955D, 1949D, 1949S, 1955, and 1947D. That makes this week's 1949D all the better in my opinion. Am I going to reorganize the Most Wanted List? Probably not. Still have seven left to find either way. The bank that I got the 1949D from last week was out of CWRs, so I just got the $100 MWR that produced my 23rd unique Mercury Dime. Man, that bank is killin' it for me lately! That's 15 of 18 1940's mercs found and 23 of 77 in the entire set. Also, my main pickup bank vault manager said she accidentally "added a zero" to a nickel order and now she's got way too many boxes. She asked if I would help her out. I obliged and ended up with the second lowest minted Jefferson in the set (and some silver to boot). See, it pays to be nice...literally! :laughing7:

Great pulls! Primo condition on that 39-D, must be from a collection.

One thing I've noticed about Jeff. nickels, is that the better the condition of the obverse, the more likely it'll be a D or S mint, especially the tougher dates. A good amount of my 48-S & 49-S nickels are not overly worn, but the 48/49-P's show heavy wear.

A pile of coins welcomed me today when I went to dump. That's always nice. It helps offset the inevitable errors that the coins counter makes. The 1936 mercury dime was gun metal gray. I thought it might be something really cool like my first Barber Dime, but that day will have to wait.

You know, all I found today in the way of silver was a 1949S...everything else was skunksville. To be honest, I would rather this than ten 1964D's. I saw the 'S' and kept it off to the side until I finished searching everything else. Then I brought it to my wife and went through all the 'S' dates till she said "Yes", starting with the already found and moving up the list. After she said no to every other 'S', I knew the '49S was had! Huge day here for the Most Wanted hunt; down goes #1! At this rate, we'll be done in no time. That's 42 down...6 to go!

No kidding! That 90 day drought over the summer was rough. Now that fall is here, we've got Most Wanted Dimes, New Mercs, rare Jefferson Nickels...just gotta push through the skunks to get to the good stuff.
