An old style keeper for french doors. They would go on the top and/or the bottom of the stationary door.

Could have I guess, but not to many things that I know of, other than french doors, used a mortised in slide bolt, especially with such a small diameter pin.

I've found similar ones on shutters and tip out windows down here. It's a nice one. I'd restore it and save it until I had a job that I could charge 50 or 60 bucks for "restored vintage hardware" on.... I have a couple buckets of old latches and locks, some people are willing to pay up to have period original hardware....
