My 1871 map shows there was a house there and the property owner told me it was a grist mill back during the civil war and also used as a trading post!!!
His words when i asked permission to detect it were "knock yourself out" LOL...Well,i knocked myself out but my high hopes of finding a pocketfull of old coins were dashed after about three hours of swinging.I found some signs of civilization and had an enjoyable afternoon in the woods but i think I'll cross that site of my list. Spoon is Madison Silverplate. Thanks for havin a look,
Jerry

I figured i was on the right track with the spoon and atlas jar lid but the signals dried up real quick so maybe I'll have to expand my perimeter a bit. Thanks for the id on the stirrup!!

No problem, buddy.  I'd say it's worth one more hunt--and broaden out the area.  That isn't enough in terms of housesite finds--unless the place had already been hit because it was a mill.

the owner didn't think it had ever been detected but it sure crossed my mind that somebody had already been there.

Hey you did great, And for a while , I thought you had Slim Pickins with you.
The ol boy was an actor , or some such thing in the older days.

Roadquest..The more you hunt, the more you find.

..also looks like a broken part or a CW era rifle sling in there too.... I'd be back out there hunting some more...

We have hunted a lot of mills in and around Chattanooga. One thing we found that might help you is that when we located the mill, most artifacts came from the nearest high point we could find. We always found stuff at the mill site but the CW stuff almost always came from a small camp on the nearest peace of high ground. Good luck but give it another try.

It looks like it might be worth another shot, maybe some silver still in the ground?

Hi MonkeyBoy,which piece looks like a piece of rifle sling, that little piece above the spoon? It has the remnants of three rivets on the larger end if that helps
