Slow and listen carefully? For what?

I'm relatively new at treasure hunting and - hate to say it getting a little frustrated digging nothing but clad. I know I'm hunting good spots cause I never run into other MD'ers and my sites are generally 120 years old. I have an Explorer se pro and would like to know... what should I be listening for other than the screaming "DIG ME" signal associated with quarters and silver trinkets. I guess I really haven't found anything deeper than 6 inches... How do the tones differ.... Thanx in advance

check out metaldetectingworld.com. there are a number of technical articles on sensitivity, depth, target masking etc. also--some really interesting points on using discrimination which could cause you to miss targets.

if i get a good signal above iron (tesoro vaquero), i usually dig it.

Hello Doitdaily,

The Explorer SE does take a little time to understand, but you will. Could you tell me what your settings are? Which screens do you use the Smartfind, digital, iron mask or all? Hunting by tone is the best way, but it takes a bit to learn all of the sounds produced.

Gold is a mid-tone, so test a few items and try to remember the tone. Do you have a test bed in your yard? This is an excellent method of learning target detection, pin pointing and tone.

You are digging lots of clad, this is a good thing! People are (or have) been visiting your hunting spot and there is a chance for lost gold jewelry.

Remember;”Low and Slow” with the SE.

Hello Again Doitdaily,

Just did a quick test of items used in another post for the AT Pro, here are the numbers for the Explorer SE.

1. Gold Ring – large (08-14)
2. Gold Bracelet – (15-01)
3. Gold Heart Pendent – (09-07)
4. Gold Cross charm – (19-01)

All but the cross charm were solid hits at 6 inches (sensitivity turned low inside the house). The cross was repeatable at two inches.

Good spots can also be barren. Metal detectors have been in use for over 50 years, and back in the late 1970's we hammered the silver! Hard to find virgin spots anymore, even private yards, they've been hit pretty good around here. I do know from experience, my best spots are the trashiest parks. Trashier, the better! Good luck.

Good point fistfulladirt In the 70s everybody had a MD but They are so advanced now I should be digging more silver I'm sure.

Professor, I switch back and forth between digital and smartfind. I thought I would use digital more when I was doing research but found smartfind combined with tones works better for me. I rarely use the Iron mask "on" and my sensitivity is set at 16, Iron at about 22 and I search in conduct. No I do not have a test garden but I know how important they are so I will get on it. Right now all my free time is spent in the field.

How obvious are these spots? You will have to hunt your backside off to find old coins in most "good spots" because they have been hunted thousands of times since the hobby took off in the 1960s.

Just because you don't see others hunting, doesn't mean they aren't there.

I have been following this philosophy for quite some time now with great success! If someone states “this place is hunted out”, I run not walk to get my detector. I have found this statement “hunted out” not true through many years of detecting experience; tougher to find things – yes, but hunted out – never! Working the trashier places where many will not go has a few benefits: (1) a lot of things waiting to be found (2) you gain a much better understanding of your machines settings and operation. (3) I believe it makes you a better hunter.

Hunted out? Here's a little something that I found at a site that had been hit for years. It's a 40lb. plantation scale weight that I hit at about 8 inches. It was probably ignored as junk--even though it's a true relic with historical and monetary value. It's going to the local historical society.

You just never know what you have till you dig it.

Jason in Enid's answer seems most appropriate.
A site that is as old as you state without detectors continually upon it, has most likely been pounded long before you.
Also, NO site is without desirable targets. Albeit, slim pickins' these days.
You should obtain Andy Sabisch' book on the Explorer n ETRac. I think his publication will be of tremendous value to you.

Thanx Cincinnatikid I just finished reading that book- It's the one with the rickety old fence in the front of what appears to be a ghost town- Great book.
All your responses are great and thanx for chiming in but the question is still unanswered so I'll ask it a little differently... Do deeper targets make a different sound or a fainter sound?
Next on my list is that test garden the professor recommended.....

Precision identification when digging deep targets comes from sound alone. Screen numbers are not to be trusted.
Time and patience will be the price you pay. You have a powerful machine. Large deep iron can read as a shallow silver coin if screen is constantly watched. It's realizing and understanding the slightest variations in tone that will lead to your success.
