Found this today and it is about the size of a quarter, with only a few VERY small markings on it?

have no idea at all!!

I think you have a button myself.Much like the dandy in my hand below.And the writing your seeing says gilt.Yours is just upside down I've seen it like that before on buttons.The shank is also missing like mine.

Pete, Nice to see you posting again! We missed your expertise! Great ID on that button, I'm sure you're right. Would be nice if johnsas could give us a bit more color on the find, such as was it found in the same area as the coins and shot he recovered. The timeframe certainly fits in well.

not exactly the same place but a in a small inlet where there used to be a dock / loading jetty around 1800
