It's intriguing. Clean it up some more and post more pictures. I would say if it's play money you risk nothing by cleaning it. It it's real gold I'd say you probably won't damage it with gentle cleaning. There's enough detail on there that if you have some clear pictures of it someone will be able to identify it. Just weighing it will tell, anybody who has ever held a gold coin knows they are way heavier then any other metal coin of similar size. If his item is the size of a dime it should weigh a lot more than a dime. He could also just take it to a jeweler or pawn shop for a quick gold test. Still looks like an aluminum play coin to me and it would then weigh less than a copper or silver or clad coin of similar size. Might actually be a good idea for all members who have never held a gold coin to go to a coin shop and handle some gold coins so they will know just how heavy they are, they will never mistake a find for gold again.

You can get an acid test kit pretty cheap online. Cool find!
